He holds a PhD degree in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Athens, obtained in 1992. Post-doctorate studies in EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory), Heidelberg, Germany; Laboratory for Enzyme Research, Institute of Biology, NCSR "Demokritos", Athens; and Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology, St. Mary's Hospital, Imperial College, London, UK. Since 1998 faculty member in the Institute of Biology in NCSR "Demokritos". Also member of several Greek and International Scientific Societies; currently Secretary General of the Hellenic Society for Biochemisty and Molecular Biology and Board member in the European Tissue Repair Society.

His group focuses on a. the mechanisms of tissue repair, the role of growth factors and their signaling pathways, and b. the mechanisms of replicative- and stress-induced cellular senescence and its role in age-related disorders (including cancer, intervertebral disc degeneration and chronic wounds). This work aims also in the development of cell replacement therapies and the evaluation of bioactive compounds with anti-ageing, anti-cancer and wound healing activities. He published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, EMBO J., Biomaterials, Cancer Res., J. Biol. Chem., Mol. Cancer Res., Arterioscl. Thromb. Vasc. Biol., Cell Signal., DNA Repair, J. Cell. Physiol. and Mech. Ageing Dev. Funded by research grants from EU (FP5, FP6 and FP7), Greek Secretary for Research and Technology, AO Foundation, as well as from the industry.
