Report on WOUNDCON 2002
Dr Mary Babu, President, ISWM
The Indian Society of Wound Management (ISWM) was established
in 1996 in Benaras Hindu University, having recognised the need for wound-care
management in our country. The main objectives of ISWM are to promote
and advance both the study and practice of wound management by encouraging
scientific research and clinical applications of wound science. Annual
scientific conferences are conducted to promote interactions with experienced
researchers and physicians abroad. This provides a platform for exchange
of ideas and future collaborations in the area of wound management. This
year the 5th annual meeting (WOUNDCON 2002) was held in Thiuvanathapuram,
Kerala State. It was very well organized by Dr Manoj Pandey.
The emphasis was on chronic wound healing situations like diabetic ulcers,
venous ulcers and pressure sores which are non healing situations and
require a different strategy of therapeutic modulation. An excellent presentation
by Dr Raj Mani (Southampton, UK) on impaired wound healing stimulated
our thinking on how the environment in the wound milieu plays a significant
role in devising treatment modalities. Professor Vijay Shukla shared his
experiences in the management of tropical leg ulcers. There were six papers
on chronic wound management.
The panel discussion on 'New frontiers for research on wound healing'
was very valuable leading to guidelines being formulated. A plan of action
emerged to adopt multidisciplinary approach which augers well for the
management of impaired and chronic wound healing in India. There were
several papers on basic research aspects of wound healing on topics related
to the efficacy of plant extracts, use of synthetic compounds to combat
resistance in burn pathogenicity and metalloproteases expression and use
of phenytoin and placental extract in the management of non healing ulcers.
The discussion which followed the presentations were very lively and informative.
These discussions lead to collaborations with the basic scientists and
physicians at different centers being crystallised.
During the Conference, Dr Mary Babu was unanimously elected to be the
President of ISWM for the next term.
